Meet Kyle

A lifelong Decatur neighbor, educator, and former Army officer who knows what strong schools mean to our families.

I grew up in the Westchester neighborhood, in the same home where my parents still live. When Westchester Elementary was closed during my fourth-grade year, my mom and I canvassed door to door to keep our school open. A decade later, the district reopened it, proof that our community's voice matters.

I graduated from the University of North Georgia in 2016 with a mathematics degree and a commission in the United States Army. Military service took me to Germany and Hawaii before my wife and I returned to Decatur in 2023 to raise our daughter. I earned a master's in teaching from Georgia State University and now teach high school math in DeKalb County.

As an educator and neighbor, I want to protect the small-town feel of Decatur's schools, make decisions transparently, and ensure every learner, especially students with disabilities, receives the support they deserve.

Priorities for the Board

Grounded in progressive values and shaped by conversations with families, educators, and students.

Transparent Governance

Open meetings, clear data sharing, and real-time updates so neighbors know what's on the agenda before decisions are made.

Investing in Every Learner

Audit special education supports, close service gaps, and partner with families and teachers to deliver inclusive classrooms.

Keeping Neighborhood Schools Strong

Preserve the lower-elementary model, protect our small class sizes, and plan growth without closing community anchors.

Academic Excellence

Champion evidence-based instruction and professional learning so City Schools of Decatur continue to lead the state.

Community Partnership

Host regular listening sessions, invite student and caregiver voices into policy, and only vote after hearing from those impacted.

ECLC Oversight

Ensure the Early Learning Center rollout delivers high-quality care without sacrificing resources from elementary campuses.

“Our school board should be as invested in every child's success as parents are. I'm running to rebuild trust, protect all neighborhood schools, and make sure every family's voice is heard before decisions are made.” - Kyle Newsome
